About Us
On
April 26, 1972 thirty charter members of the Club were recognized
as the "new" club on Maryland's Eastern Shore. On May 6, 1972
the Club was presented its charter at the Commander Hotel in Ocean
City Maryland as the newest club in the Maryland District of Optimist
International. Charter president John Lynch received the charter
and the story began.
The
Club grew to 38 members quickly and fund raisers and other programs
began. The first major fund raiser was a big dance featuring the
Warren Covington Big Band. The first oratorical contest was held
in 1973 and has been held annually since.
During
the mid 1970s membership declined but the programs continued.
In the 1980s membership grew back to around 35 participants. The
crab cake sales began and the popular boat show was started. Success
begat Success.
Programs and fund raisers have grown dramatically over the past 32 years. Budgets now exceed $200,000. Membership in the Club has increased to over 115 members. The Scholarship Lotto proceeds have exceeded $1,000,000.00 in scholarships for local high school students. The Club has attained Honor Club Status 15 consecutive years. That is number one in Maryland.
The
Optimist Club of Ocean City/Berlin is truly a friend of youth
and an asset to the local community.
