Two ocean side and four bay side camping areas have been established by the
National Park Service for visitors who wish to backpack the island or canoe on the bay. All areas are located in Maryland . . . no camping is permitted in the Virginia portion of Assateague which is administered by the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. There is no fee for backcountry camping but an entrance fee, good for up to 7 days, applies to each vehicle. A separate fee exists for entry into the wildlife refuge.
