Surf Fishing on the Atlantic Beaches of Maryland & Delaware |
|
Surf Fishing from the sandy beaches is a VERY POPULAR
activity . It is a great RELAXER, a wonderful "experience with nature", and a great, yet inexpensive way to get out
in the fresh saltwater air. The added bonus, FRESH FISH for your dinner. This section is devoted to bringing to you some of the scenery and action of surf fishing along the Atlantic Seaboard, and in particular the sandy beaches of Assateaque Island and Ocean City, Maryland and the Delaware beaches from Fenwick Island to Lewes, Delaware. They all afford quiet solitude, soft sandy beaches, and when the "fish are biting" , some TABLEFARE. |
The Best Time to start is AT SUNRISE
As the sun Rises on a
CLEAR fall day in October,
many anglers are venturing onto the beach to CATCH the
BIG one or just get that REAL relaxation
that the sights ,
sounds and smells of the ocean bring. The picture on the left
was taken
in mid-October of 1996 from Ocean City, Maryland.
As the day reaches mid morning, and the tide is coming in,
the ocean continues its relentless tossing of waves onto
the sandy beach. This picture was taken at Assateaque Island, MD
Marty and Bob Allsup, of Mapleton, Illinois had visited our shores, and
took it upon themselves to do a day surf fishing trip on Assateaque
Assateague Island, MD is but a short drive from Ocean City, Maryland. The drive is scenic and
it takes about 40 minutes of travel to get to the bridge crossing over onto the barrier island.
Once on the Island, the scenery is truly NATURE AT ITS BEST.
As one drives down the road, the famous wild Assateague ponies,
amble in wild grasses, nibbling at their lunch.
or often the poniesare traveling a bit and heading home.
Assateague is an outdoor recreational wonderland, offering salt water
surf fishing, walking trails, four wheel
drive vehicle access, canoeing,
crabbing, camping, nature trails, or just lying on the beach, soaking up the sun.
As one departs their vehicle from a parking lot, there are wooden walking ramps to cross over the
dune to the beach front.
Once one is set up with a casting rod, bait on a hook, its time to
HEAVE HO and cast the hook and line into the ocean.
Now, if the fish are there, and you detect the "bite", set the hook
you can pull in the "catch of the day".
Pictured here, Marty (from Illinois), a virtual novice at surfcasting,
proves that determination overcomes lack of experience.
Having followed the right recipes for catching em, it is not unusual
for the happy angler to haul in two fish at a time, as witnessed here,
where Marty catches two snapper bluefish. Now all she needs is
the right recipe to cook em.
It is early in the Season (October), and the bigger blues cruise the
shores in late October and November.
Hope to see you AT THE BEACH -
