THE REHOBOTH BEACH FILM SOCIETY AND CAMP REHOBOTH are co-sponsoring a screening of “Serving in Silence: the Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” at Women’s Fest 2012.
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and CAMP Rehoboth are co-sponsoring a screening of “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story” at 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, Rehoboth Ave. Rehoboth Beach.
Glenn Close won the “Outstanding Lead Actress” Emmy for her performance in this made-for-television drama about the rights of homosexuals in the military. This true story follows the legal challenge of Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer to her involuntary discharge.
After twenty-years of service in the army and with an eye toward promotion, Col Cammermeyer undergoes the process of upgrading her security rating. During the interview, she tells the investigator that she is a homosexual. Suddenly she is tossed into discharge proceedings. With determination, the help of her family and support of gay rights activists, Col. Cammermeyer fights the system. Judy Davis stars as her partner for which she won the Emmy for “Outstanding Supporting Actress”. Barbra Streisand was one of several executive producers and the film was nominated for several Emmy and Golden Globe awards. [1995, USA, Runtime: 91 minutes, not rated]
After the screening, Grethe Cammermeyer will be present to discuss the journey of her fight against the system.
A Women’s Fest 2012 pass includes admission to this screening. For non-pass holders, tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased by calling RBFS at 302-645-9095 or online at www.rehobothfilm.com/film_events. Seating is limited and advanced ticket purchases are encouraged.
The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities. The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival (November 7-11, 2012). The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
