The next Around the World screening will feature “Vasermil” on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:00 pm in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway. Around the World features critically acclaimed, international, independent films and is sponsored by Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Lewes Public Library, and Movies at Midway. The film series is free and open to the public.
In the drama “Vasermil”, emerging filmmaker Mushon Salmona reveals the racial and economic dynamics of Israeli society. This is no ordinary teens-playing-sports-and-overcoming-adversity movie as the film takes a raw look at the no-future world of three teenagers who live in the same tough neighborhood and who are brought together on a mission to reinvigorate their local football club.
Shlomi lives with his widowed mother, little sister, and step-father and works as a pizza delivery boy. Adiel, of Ethiopian descent, has to look after his young brother and sick mother. Dima, a new immigrant from Russia, fights an uphill battle against stereotypes that would peg him a gangster or drug dealer.
A teacher asks Shlomi, Adiel, and Dima to work together in leading their local football club in a youth championship tournament at the Vasermil Stadium. In order to be competitive, they will have to play as a team, overcome their differences, as well as get over their sense of inferiority and prejudice. Success in the tournament will garner notice by the scouts of the local football empire which could be the ticket to a different life. Can the three boys overcome serious obstacles or does hardship prevail? [2007, Israel, Runtime: 93 minutes, in Russian, Amharic, and Hebrew with English subtitles]
