The next Around the World screening will feature “Before Your Eyes” on Wednesday, May 2, at 7:00 pm in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway. Around the World features critically acclaimed, international, independent films and is sponsored by Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Lewes Public Library, and Movies at Midway. The film series is free and open to the public.
Before Their Eyes is a moving drama about ten-year old Gulistan and her younger brother Firat who live happily with their parents in the heart of Turkish Kurdistan. Suddenly tragedy strikes when their mother and father are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their eyes.
Traumatized and orphaned, Gulistan and Firat try to care for their infant sister, but their money soon runs out and they're forced onto the street. It is there that Gulistan meets the part-time escort Dilara. Accompanying her on a hotel call one day, Gulistan is shocked to discover Dilara's client is the murderer of her parents, and quickly devises a plan for revenge. The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Monthly Screening series will feature “Margin Call” on Thursday, April 26, at 7:00 pm at DiFebo’s in Bear Trap Dunes, and on Friday, April 27, at 7:00 pm in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway.
“Margin Call”, a thriller drama follows the key people at an investment bank over a 24-hour period, during the early stages of the financial crisis. A respected financial company is downsizing and one of the victims is the risk management division head, who was working on a major analysis just when he was let go. His protégé completes the study late into the night and then frantically calls his colleagues in about the company's financial disaster he has discovered. What follows is a long night of panicked double checking and double dealing as the senior management prepare to do whatever it takes to mitigate the debacle to come even as the handful of conscientious comrades find themselves dragged along into the unethical abyss. [2011, USA, Runtime: 107 minutes, Rated: R for language]
Matthew Pejkovic, of Matt’s Movie Reviews, critiques the film as “intelligently written and brilliantly portrayed, “Margin Call” delves into the belly of the beast where consequence is given no conscious and the line between good vs evil is blurred amongst a sea of numbers.”
Janet Redman, CRPC (Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch) will lead a post-screening discussion.
Monthly screenings are $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members. Attendees of the Ocean View screening at DiFebo’s get 10% off their meal on the evening of the screening. DiFebo’s begins serving dinner at 4:30 pm, reservations and early arrivals for dinner are encouraged.

The Cinema and Art film series presents “Howard Pyle & The Illustrated Story on Thursday, April 19, 2012, 6:30 pm at the INN at Canal Square in Lewes.
Howard Pyle, a Delaware treasure, was one of America’s most popular illustrators and storytellers at a time when top illustrators were celebrities. His images may be better known than his name. Enjoy this informative film to learn more about Howard Pyle, a Delaware treasure.
Howard Pyle and the Illustrated Story explores the history, artistry and spectacular rise of this amazing artist. The documentary reveals Howard Pyle’s (1853-1911) talents as prolific author, illustrator, and teacher. It shows how Pyle established a new standard of excellence in turn-of-the-century American graphic art. Interviews with artists Jamie Wyeth and Darrell Warren (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) uncover the many stylistic Pyle influences in painting, illustration, and modern cinema. The film was written, directed and produced by Wilmington native, Paul Mento of Silver Hand Productions. Mento’s production studio is located three blocks from Pyle’s former studio. Take pleasure in the opportunity to meet and talk with another Delaware treasure, filmmaker Paul Mento, who will be present to share his filmmaking experiences.
Cinema & Art is a bi-annual film series that brings artists and art to the big screen. The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to present a screening of “Blast!” as a part of the On Screen/In Person tour. The screening will take place at 7:00 pm, Fri, April 20, in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway.
This is a great opportunity to meet five-time Emmy winner director Paul Devlin. “Blast” is a suspenseful documentary that follows the story of Paul Devlin’s brother, Mark Devlin PhD, as he leads a tenacious team of scientists hoping to figure out how all the galaxies formed by launching a revolutionary new telescope under a NASA high-altitude balloon.
Their adventure takes them from Arctic Sweden to Inuit polar bear country in Canada, where catastrophic failure forces the team to try all over again on the desolate ice in Antarctica. The film also explores the crazy life of scientists, their professional obsessions, personal and family sacrifices, as well as philosophical and religious perspectives, all of which give emotional resonance to a suspenseful story of space exploration. Tim Teeman of “Time Entertainment” says “For those of us with bad memories of physics and chemistry class, it (the film) was inspirational.”
Following the screening, director Paul Devlin will be joined by Associate Professor Douglas Miller (University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment) to discuss the film’s artistic and scientific contributions.

Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to be selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to be a host site for the first year of the On Screen/In person film touring program. The goal of the program is to bring the vision of some of the country’s best independent filmmakers to a broad audience throughout the mid-Atlantic region, especially in communities with limited access to their work. On Screen/In Person will tour six new independent, American films, including animation, documentary, experimental, and narrative work accompanied by the filmmaker.
