06/19/2013Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema by the Canal presents “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away”
Cinema by the Canal begins its 2013 summer series of outdoor film screenings with “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away” on Wednesday, June 19 at the Lewes Canalfront Park. This year’s expanded four-part series of summer films for all ages is sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park, and Citizens Bank. In this fantasy feature, a young woman in a small Mid-Western town goes to a traveling carnival one evening, where she is urged by a silent clown to visit the carnival's circus and see The Aerialist, the show's star attraction. She is entranced by The Aerialist, but during his act he misses a catch and falls to the ground. She rushes to help him, but then the ground beneath them gives way and they fall through into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil. Separated, they travel through the different tent worlds trying to find each other, interacting with the strange and wonderful performers and performances of Cirque du Soleil. The Hollywood Reporter’s Megan Lehmann says “James Cameron and Andrew Adamson join forces to represent a fantastical love story, featuring the best of the world-famous circus troupe’s elaborate performances. [2012, USA, Runtime: 91 min., Rated PG] The film will begin at dusk (8:15 - 8:30 pm) at Canalfront Park located at 211 Front Street in Lewes. Admission is free. Please bring chairs or blankets and come enjoy an unique and fun family outdoor film experience. For more information, please visit www.rehobothfilm.com. The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities. The Film Society sponsors monthly screenings, special events, and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival (November 6-10, 2013). The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is funded, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. Each session will include the screening of a documentary or a feature and a short, time permitting. Reviewers are asked to complete a rating form and may also join in the post film discussion. Festival Program Director Joe Bilancio will facilitate the reviews so you will be sure to enjoy stimulating discussions about what factors determine a film’s suitability for a Festival. Madelyn Reid accidentally learns of her husband’s infidelity when she saves his sexy young mistress (Leonor Watling of “Talk to Her”) from a bungled suicide attempt. When her unsuspecting young rival, Lucy suggests the two new “best friends” take each other’s advice on everything, Madelyn sees an opportunity to seize the upper hand. The plan backfires when the aspiring young actress insists Madelyn keep her end of the bargain and orders her to star as King Lear in a very amateur production, with Lucy playing The Fool. Madelyn’s life is transformed in unexpected ways as, like Lear, she struggles with matters of mortality and betrayal, loyalty and love. Marcia Gay Harden gives a hilarious, touching and utterly believable performance in this delightful comedy about two women who become the unlikeliest of friends. [2012, Canada, Runtime: 115 min, Rated: R] Admission for Monthly Screenings is $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members.
