03/22/2012 - 03/23/2012Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Monthyl Screening presents
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Monthly Screening series will feature “Man in the Chair” on Thursday, Mar 22, at 7:00 pm at DiFebo’s in Bear Trap Dunes, and on Friday, Mar 23, at 7:00 pm in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway. An award - winning drama, “Man in the Chair” stars Christopher Plummer as Flash, a man who longs for the days when he worked as a crew member on such cinematic masterpieces as “Citizen Kane”. When Flash meets teenage film fanatic Cameron Kincaid (Michael Angarano), he becomes an unlikely mentor and agrees to help Cameron make a film to compete in a student competition where the top prize is a film school scholarship and, for Cameron, a ticket out of his difficult home life. Flash recruits his eccentric friends from the Motion Picture Home. A quirky fellowship develops, in which Flash and his friends help Cameron make his film, and, in doing so, change his life. According to Rex Reed of the “New York Observer”, “Man in the Chair is a modest but intelligent feel-good movie with a spectacular performance by Christopher Plummer and some wise and deeply affecting writing and direction by Michael Schroeder. [2007, USA, Runtime: 107 min, Rated PG-13] Pamela Preston, a local film and television production professional, will lead a post-screening discussion. Monthly screenings are $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members. Attendees of the Ocean View screening at DiFebo’s get 10% off their meal on the evening of the screening. 03/16/2012Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Delmarva Roots series presents
For immediate release: Feb 16, 2012 For more information, please contact: Wendi Dennis Rehoboth Beach Film Society 107 Truitt Ave. Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 302-645-9095, ext 2 wendi@rehobothfilm.com Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Milton Historical Society conclude the 2012 Delmarva Roots series about Delmarva’s rich history with a screening of “Watermen” on Friday, Mar 16 at 7:00 pm at the Milton Fire Hall. Making a living on the water is an essential part of the cultural history of Delmarva. Watermen provide restaurants near and far with the seafood we enjoy. Economic and environmental issues have made a huge impact on the profession in the past 40 years. This documentary provides a glimpse of community life where work is dependent on water in the 1960’s. By examining three years in the life of skipjack captain Art Daniels, his family, and his colleagues as they spend time oystering, crabbing, and living on the Chesapeake Bay, the simple but powerful story of watermen’s lives is revealed to those who enjoy the fruits of their labor. [1969, USA, Runtime: 63 min, Not rated] After the screening, Dr. Michael Lewis, a Salisbury University professor specializing in Delmarva environmental history will conduct a brief Q&A comparing the profession’s past and present. Admission for this event is $5 for adults and $3 for children twelve and under. It is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance either online at www.rehobothfilm.com, or by calling the Rehoboth Beach Film Society at 302.645.9095, ext. 1. 03/10/2012Rehoboth Beach Film Society's On Screen/In Person series presents
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to present a screening of “Family Talk” as a part of the On Screen/In Person tour. The screening will take place at 7:00 pm, Sat, Mar 10, in the upstairs screening at Movies at Midway. “Family Talk” director Sara Terry will be present to introduce her film. A former magazine freelance writer, Sara Terry made a mid-career transition into photojournalism and documentary photography in the late 1990s. In 2009 she was awarded a 2009 Sundance Documentary Institute grant for “Family Talk”. This documentary shows how victims and perpetrators of Sierra Leone's brutal civil war are finding methods of healing in an unprecedented program of tradition-based truth-telling and forgiveness ceremonies. Through reviving their ancient practice of “fambul tok” (family talk), Sierra Leoneans continue to build sustainable peace at the grass-roots level, resolving conflict through conversation. As a result, they are succeeding where the international community's efforts failed. Filled with lessons for the West, “Family Talk” explores the depths of a culture that believes true justice lies in redemption and healing for individuals, and forgiveness is the surest path to restoring dignity and building strong communities. [2010, USA, Runtime: 82 min, Sierra Leone, Not rated, in English and Krio with English subtitles] Following the screening, director Sara Terry will join former Lutheran Pastor Dick Kaufman and Restorative Justice Practitioner Charito Calvachi-Mateyko, JD, MACT, in a discussion about the film. In addition, the audience will be invited to share reactions to the film by participating in a Circle of Dialogue, a forgiveness ceremony shown in the documentary. Tickets are $4 for Film Society members and $5 for future members. Tickets can be purchased online at www.rehobothfilm.com, by calling 302-645-9095, ext 1, or visiting the RBFS office, Mon-Fri, 9:00 am- 4:30 pm. Please note that tickets are non-refundable. Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to be selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to be a host site for the first year of the On Screen/In person film touring program. The goal of the program is to bring the vision of some of the country’s best independent filmmakers to a broad audience throughout the mid-Atlantic region, especially in communities with limited access to their work. On Screen/In Person will tour six new independent, American films, including animation, documentary, experimental, and narrative work accompanied by the filmmaker. On Screen/In person is made possible by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Regional Touring Program and the Delaware Division of the Arts. The mission of the RBFS is to promote the art of film and, through outreach initiatives, to entertain, educate, and enrich the cultural life of local and extended communities.
